THE YEAR THAT WAS 2006-2007

  CLUB SERVICE 1 : Director: Rtn. Gaurang Jalan


CLASSIFICATION:

A Classification Survey was made and the classifications of the members were updated.

MEMBERSHIP:

Thirteen new members were taken to fill the vacant classifications Two lady members were taken.

ROTARY INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION:

We conducted quizzes and discussions on Rotary Topics
We invited Past Distt. Governors and distinguished speakers to speak on Rotary subjects
We hosted and co-hosted ten Intercity Meetings & Seminars.
We re-launched a new look website: www.rotarycalmahanagar.org.in

FAMILY OF ROTARY

We maintained the Rotary Fam ily System by dividing members into six clusters and t\vo clusters to form a family.
We encouraged many fellowships which were hosted by different clusters. Spouses and Children were kept involved in all activities.




  CLUB SERVICE II : Director: Rtn. Deepak Choudhury


ATTENDANCE:

100% Attendance recognitions were made. Average attendance was improved.
We had good attendance at all District Events & Seminars.

BULLETIN:

Our information packed and well laid out weekly Bulletin MAHAN AGAR, was adjudged the Best Bulletin of R.J. District 3290. We sent our Bulletins to all concerned in District ·and to other clubs regularly.

FELLOWSHIP:
Mahanagar fellowships were the talk oftown and there was one, practically every month.
We had three Cluster Fellowship Dinners 'Rang De Basanti Antakshari', Hawaiian Eve and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
The Fellowships on Installation Day and the Distt. Governor's official visit was attended by all members. Diwali Meet, Club Picnic and Holi Meet were full of class, flavour and fun and based on different themes. Overnight excursion to Bakkhali had a large number of members who combined service with fellowship. President's Party on 30th June 2007 was a very emotional affair and was attended by a record number of members.

FUND RAISING:

The Souvenir on 19th July 2006 raised Rs. II Lacs for us. Greeting Card Project was also launched on 19th July 2006.
Baby Palak Muchhal Show helped Club to raise Rs. 7.5 lacs for 'Healing Little Hearts.' Members generously donated for various projects during the year.

PUBLIC IMAGE:

The huge Rotary Wheel on the Pay & Use Toilet Complex in the most prominent location ofthe City is seen by more number ofCalcuttans than any other signage anywhere else. This has given a real boost to the image of Rotary and Rotarians as conscious citizens of Calcutta.

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD:

Rotarian of the Year award was instituted by us and the member showing all-round exemplary
commitment and participation in all activities of the Club would be awarded this coveted honour during the next year's Installation Meeting.




 COMMUNITY SERVICE I : Director: RtD. Dr. Billal Khetawat


HEALING LITTLE HEARTS:
58 Paedeatric Heart Surgeries for repairing congenital defects of children of underprivileged parents were performed during the year. The total cost of the project was Rs. 75 lacs. This project got us the coveted Citation from Rl President Bill Boyd as 'Significant Achievement Award'.

ANDHAKAAR SE PRAKASH (EYE CARE):
About 16000 Eye checkups were performed during the year
1600 IOLs were conducted during the year at various centers.
Awareness about avoidable blindness was created by holding talks and speeches.
People were persuaded for eye donation and pledging of eyes.

TACKLING SILENT KILLERS (Diabetes & Hypertension):
Check up, Awareness & Advise Camp were held at public places throughout the year
Awareness was created by handing out leaflets.

SPARKLING SMILES (Dental Check ups and Dental Hygiene Awareness):
Dental check ups were conducted in schools and students were educated about Oral Hygiene

PULSE POLIO:
We regularly participated in the District's program on NJD. The uniqueness of our program was the mobile van in which we went from locality to locality covering 100% children in our area of operation.

AMBULANCE:
We received an Ambulance from MLA Sri Shobhandeb Chatterjee, in appreciation of our good serv ices to the underprivileged and needy. We dedicated the Ambulance to the welfare ofthe community.

BLOOD DONATION:
Three large blood donation camps were organized at Kalighat, Purba Medinipur and Padmapukur.
More than 600 units of blood was donated to Govt. Blood Banks.

HELPING TO HEAR:
We gifted Hearing Aids, Computers and other equipment worth Rs. 8.46 Lacs to Oral School For The Deaf.

DRUG ABUSE AWARENESS:
We raised awareness against Drug Abuse by distributing more than 10000 leaflets in various areas.




 COMMUNITY SERVICE II: Director: Rin. Harkesh Gupta


RCC:
Our Vocational Training Centre at RCC at Boral functioned satisfactorily.
We sponsored a medical diagnostic centre at our RCC at Bora!.
We provided employment opportunities to unemployed youth in Boral & Netajinagar area

INTERACT:
We formed Interact Club of St. Thomas' Day School. Charter presentation was done by Distt. Governor
Rtn. Debashish Mitra on 13'10 February 2007.

PAY & USE TOILET
We constructed a well appointed Pay & Use Toilet Complex atthe most busy and public frequented area of Park Street AJC Bose Road Crossing at a cost ofRs. 7.5 lacs and donated the same to KMC for operation. The keys were accepted by the Mayor ofKolkata, Sri Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya and other officials of KMC. This structure will be a landmark in that area and will serve as a prototype for all future projects of th is type taken up by other NGOs.

TOY BANK:
The Toy Bank at Salt Lake was well maintained.

JAL HI JIWAN HAl (WATER MANAGEMENT):
We provided a deep hlbewell in the arsenic prone areas of San thai Parganas at Birbhum.
We installed a unique Cold Drinking Water Kiosk at Park Street.
We installed three water purifiers at Dumdum Motijheel Girls' High School, a Govt. aided school.

LEARNING 3 R's (LITERACY DRIVE):
We continued the CLE Program with full force.
We organized a massive rally 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan' Education For All, in which 2000 children partici pated.
We distributed a lot of study material and stationery in underprivileged schools We provided Computers at many under privileged schools.

HELPING THE HELPLESS:

Happy moments were spent and time shared with spastics and children of orphanages.
We provided Hearing Aids, Computers and other educational equipments worth Rs. 8.46 lacs to the students of Oral School forthe Deaf.
We create job opportunities for 35 unemployed youth during the year, by providing the Driving Training.
About 60 ladies passed out as certified seamstresses from our vocational training centers.
We organized movie screenings for underprivileged street children who had never been to a cinema hall.
We distributed woolens and blankets on the street s ofKolkata on many a wintry nights.

FOOD TO FEED:
We distributed food to underprivileged section especially in orphanages, homes for mentally & physically handicapped and old age homes on a regular basis.

TREE PLANTATION:
We planted many trees amidst the concrete jungl~, helping the city breathe.




  INTERNATIONAL SERVICE: Director: Rtn. Vikram Doogar


GSE & YOUTH EXCHANGE:
We hosted visiting GSE team from Germany.
We hosted Youth Exchange Students fi-om USA & Brazil.

MATCHING GRANTS:
We had two running Matching Grants worth Rs. 30 lacs.
We received two fresh Matching Grants worth Rs. 23.46 lacs during the year.

ANNUAL GIVING:
Rotary Club of Calcutta Mahanagar contributed US $ 16400 to The Rotary Foundation, making it the third highest contributor of the District 3290, in its category. The per capita contribution was US $ 221.62 as against District Target of US $ 100 per capita.




 VOCATIONAL SERVfCE : Director: Rtn. Raakesh Jain


VOCATIONAL TRAINING & MICROCREDIT:
Driving Training was given to 35 unemployed youth ofRCC Boral and Netaji Nagar Bustee.
60 ladies wl;lretrained as seamstresse.s at Vocational Training Centres at Boral / Netajinagar
10 Sewing Machines were donated to ladies trained at our Vocational Training Centres
10 Sewing Machines were given on micro credit to trained unemployed youth giving them a chance to live with dignity.
10 Cycle Vans were given on micro credit.
Tool Sets were given to trained unemployed carpenters to help them work independently.

VOCATIONAL AWARDS:
Rotary Youth Icon Award was instituted during the year and Rotary Youth leon Award 2006 was awarded to singing prodigy, Baby Palak Muchhal who has dedicated her talent to helping children with congenital heart defects, get a new lease ofJife.
We felicitated Sister S.M. Cyril, on her being conferred the coveted honour, Padmashree by the President ofIndia.

PROMOTION OF FOUR WAY TEST:

We installed a huge plaque with the Four Way Test printed on it atthe most visible area of Park Street AJC Bose Road Crossing. Hundreds of pedestrians, mostly school children and office goers view the same everyday.
We also promoted FOUR WA YTEST by printing it on envelopes and distributing stickers.

The year was a very gratifying one with accolades pouring in.
Our Club was adjudged the 3'd Best Club of District 3290. Our Bullettin was adjudged the Best Bulletin of the District. This award came to us after many years. The list of prizes and honours received by Rotary Club of Calcutta Mahanagar is as below:

RotalY International President's SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in recognition of outstanding and significant community service efforts.
Outstanding President ofthe year awarded to Rtn.~Dr. Rampal Vidhawan. Outstanding SecretalY of the year awarded to Rtn. Sushil Sethia.
R I District Governor's citation to Rotary Club of Calcutta Mahanagar for Outstanding Performance to further the cause of Rotary during 2006-07.
Our members also made us proud by their receiving:
PDG Shekhar Mehta received the coveted SERVICE ABOVE SELF Award from Rotary International.
He also received the ROTARY FOUNDATION'S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD the Highest Award conferred by The Rotary Foundation, in recognition of his exemplary services to the foundation.
PP Ajay Lodha received the prize for being an Outstanding Zonal Representative and Leading The Way. The support of all members and guidance of the very enthusiastic Past Presidents was the motivating force behind the happening year which we all enjoyed.
